Spring · April to early June
Hellebore, narcissus, Virginia bluebells, wild geranium
Plant while the soil is cool and damp. Bulbs go in the previous autumn; bare-root perennials establish fastest now, before the first hot week.
Plant Guide
Use this as your planting calendar. It is the same list we work from when we draw a border, so nothing here is theoretical.
Every plant we specify has already been trialled in Minnesota clay, alley heat and boulevard salt. If it will not carry its weight through a zone 4 winter, it does not make the list.

Dahlia, zinnia, echinacea, prairie dropseed, salvia
Water deeply twice a week rather than lightly every day. Deadhead the cutting rows and leave the coneflower seed heads standing for the finches.
Kale, chard, aster, little bluestem, allium bulbs
The best planting month in Minnesota is September. Mulch after the ground chills, not before, so voles do not move in for the winter.
Send us a photo and a rough measurement in the notes below. We will bring three planting options to the consultation.
